PROJECT OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this project is to give you the opportunity to
▪ Research law enforcement policies
▪ Relate law enforcement policies to crime rates
▪ Relate law enforcement policies to criminological theory
▪ Demonstrate your research and writing skills
Research and write a minimum 1,000-word essay on the following subject:
During the 1990s, New York City adopted a method of policing based on the broken windows theory, and crime subsequently decreased. Research and answer the following questions in your essay:
▪ What is the broken windows theory of policing?
▪ How did the New York Police Department implement
their new theory of policing?
▪ How has the number of stops in New York City changed over the past couple of decades?
▪ What civil rights issues are raised by New York City’s method of policing?

1. Create a title page with the following information:
a. Course title and number (Criminology, CJS 308)
b. Your name
c. Your Student Number
d. Project number: 50164800 e. Date
2. Write an essay of at least 1,000 words answering all of the questions
3. The essay should be double-spaced, with left and right margins of 1 to 1.25 inches, flush left and ragged right. Use a plain, 12-point font.
4. Incorporate and properly reference the sources of information. To cite your sources, please follow this procedure:
a. Use in-text citations to indicate references to information from outside sources. Include the author’s name and the relevant page number(s) in parentheses.
Here’s an example: Human beings have been described as “symbol-using animals” (Burke 3).
b. At the end of your paper, include a Works Cited page, listing all of the sources you’ve consulted. Use either MLA or APA format for this page. For information on how to prepare this page, go to the Penn Foster Library and click on Guidebooks and Tips in the main menu.
5. Be sure to answer all of the questions in essay form.
